Alpaca - MacGyver's Balboa
If
you've ever participated in an AOBA sanctioned alpaca show event,
you know how tough the competition has become in the last several
years. Producing a Champion Grade show winner, has become
increasingly more difficult with every show we attend.
The 2006/2007 show season has been especially encouraging for us,
having won
16 AOBA
Certified Halter Class Championships
alone,
as well as
20 First Place Halter Class
Blue Ribbons under 10
DIFFERENT JUDGES,
and ALL before he was 22 months old!! He is now RETIRED from showing,
and is ready to begin his Herdsire career.
As of May 2007 (22 mos of age)
MacGyver's Balboa is a WORLD RECORD HOLDER for the most
AOBA Halter Class Color Championships in history...
...EVER!
One
of our most proud moments came at the 2007 Futurity
Show & Sale, where Balboa received the honor
of being awarded 1st Place and Color Champion under Amanda VandenBosh.
Our first show of 2007 was also great success. We entered Balboa
at the FABA event in Jacksonville FL under Julio Sumar where he
won his first championship of the year. Mr. Sumar had this to say
about Balboa - " I'd like you all to take a look
at this alpaca. This Suri is the TOTAL PACKAGE with uniformity from
head to toe. GREAT locks, GREAT luster, and a GREAT head and neck!"
At the PAOBA 2006 show, where Balboa also won First Place and
Reserve Champion, Jude Anderson said this about our champion - "
If you want to see what we are breeding alpacas for, take a look
at this guy. Extremely fine fiber, and incredible luster. He also
stands with great conformation."
So far in his career (2006 - 2007), Balboa has won under
the following AOBA Judges:
- Tim Lavan - 5
Firsts, 3 Color Championships
- 2006 Kentucky Classic (Louisville KY) / 1st place and Color

CONGRATULATIONS to VICTORIA LANE ALPACAS!
We want to congratulate Fred & Karen Biscella of
Victoria Lane Alpacas for their investment
in half interest of our champion Jr. Herdsire Balboa.
Balboa will now be co-owned by Select Suri Partners of
Salem, Ohio and Victoria Lane Alpacas of East Palestine,
Ohio. We could not be more pleased to share ownership
of this unique champion with Fred and Karen! They are
truly some of the nicest and most sincere people we have
met. Those of you who have met them at past alpaca shows
will surely agree.
Balboa's mother is WHITE full Peruvian
LCA Nancee Ann, and his father is the famous Macgyver!
He should be ready to begin breeding in early summer,
2007. Balboa should be a busy guy as we have nearly booked
him solid! If you are interested in a breeding, call
soon.
Once again, congratulations Victoria Lane Alpacas!

What
Are Alpacas?
** Alpacas are South American mammals
closely related to the llama and vicuña. Partially domesticated,
the alpaca possibly was derived from the wild guanaco. The natural
habitat of the alpaca is the Andes in South America. It is most
commonly kept in herds by the Native Americans in the highlands
of Peru and Chile.
The alpaca, a surefooted animal, is smaller than the llama, has
longer, softer wool, and ordinarily is not used as a beast of burden.
Like the llama and camel, alpacas sometimes spit. After 11 months'
gestation the female gives birth to one offspring. The young have
short wool until they mature.
Herds of alpacas graze almost wild on high plateaus, 4267 to 4877
m (14,000 to 16,000 ft) above sea level. At shearing time the Native
Americans drive them to the villages and clip off about 20 cm (about
8 in) of the wool. The alpaca provides white, gray, or yellow wool,
although the black and dark brown fibers are especially valued.
The fiber is elastic and strong and is straighter and silkier than
sheep's wool. Alpacas are kept primarily for its wool, from which
a fine cloth is made.
Scientific classification: The alpaca belongs to the family Camelidae.
It is classified as Lama pacos.
